Nancy Solman – Biography
.
Nancy has been painting for most of her life, but only recently has she placed her work in front of the public eye. She lives in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
“I have drawn and painted all my life, it seems, and I don’t see any likelihood of stopping. I have not, to date, made any serious effort to display or sell my creations, but hope to change that.”
In addition to painting in acrylics, Nancy also works with watercolour, pencil, pen and collage. Her professional training is in fact Interior design, but over the past 25 years much of Nancy’s creative resources have gone into set design and scenic art.
“The Urban Fairy paintings are a sampling of my acrylic paintings. Most of the pieces are fairly small 10″ x 12″ up to a max of 40″ x 30″. The Faerie series is based on a request from my son-in-law to paint an Urban fairy painting and it simply snowballed from there.”
“I went on to paint more and more and found myself looking at and taking pictures of anything that would lend itself to having a fairie settled in on it. I have many more ideas for the series, but at the moment I am side tracking into a more metaphysical series and I am working on a personal challenge of not using any black or white pigments while painting (for the next 45 days) as well as working with only one brush size per painting. I want to work on loosening up from the insane details that the fairie paintings required of me. I will need to return to much of that level of detail when painting the fairies because of the nature of the wee creatures.”

I love these fairies! So delicate.
Fairy, fairy, nice!
I love the integration of fantasy with industrial components.
I’m currently enjoying the thought of this interpretation: There’s a certain “magic” to technology, e.g. flipping a switch results in light. Thus, Ms. Solman’s fairies could be considered a personification of the magic of technology.
wow, those are some good collection I’ve seen, really great work specially the “High wire Fairies”.
I adore these paintings of the fairies, the are amazing! thank you showing them.
Wow, these are incredible! I love the contrast between the “normal” settings, and the “out of the ordinary” fairies co-exsiting. Beautiful work, the texture is fantastic.
Good to see your work here Nancy.

Your work is very impressive. I especially like “Playing in the Rain.”
It feels like it should be the beginning of a children’s story.
I agree with Jose, the integration of fantasy with modernity is always a fascinating artistic duality.
Hello Nancy! The paintings have left me thinking…. what is the message you are trying to send out! The integration of fantasy and industry! The love emitting from each of your characters… awesome! Thanks for sharing them with us here. Keep up the good work.

Wow, I love how you incorporated every day “human” items into your paintings. The whole urban fairy idea is great! Keep up the good work.
I enjoy that you appreciate the magic of fairies. You bring a humanness by their surroundings yet still capture a mystery/magic of folklore. It would seem that all your fairies are not all the same size. Some look smaller than others to fit their environment. You will never run out of ideas by keeping the theme you have started. What about a fairy on a cell phone?!
What beautiful fairies…a great reminder to see the magic in everything!
Ohh so delicate and wonderfully colored. I love all the fairies. I see one male fairy snuck into a painting. Seems they’ve quite elusive I’ve only seen a handful of male fairies. I do collect pictures of them in statue forms and have yet to find a male one.
You are a very talented lady. keep it up your paintings are very loving, warm, fun, colorful, and bless everyone who loves the fantasy realm and wee people. It’s great to see the magick in everything including everyday life.
WELL DONE…. Yo did a great job Nancy. Keep it up. your painting are very imaginary. It means that you compare the real world with magical world. Nice job. I like your all paintings very much.
Dleightful paintings. It’s terrific that you keep painting.
If you ever decide to market your work, perhaps have prints made from the paintings. Lots of people would love them. Mary MacIntyre http://coachingcooking.com
these paintings are so cute and whimsical I love them
Those are beautiful. I love the detail and the color. I also like the fact the fairies are in diffrent settings.
Wow, these are very imaginative! I like to think there are magical things at work in the places people don’t often look or remember are there.
Wow, these are just absolutely amazing. I’ve always wished I was talented as an artist, but sadly I am not. So I just live vicariously through others artistic talents! Your amazing.
These are very imaginative and detailed. I love the use of color!
These fairies are awe some and very beautifull and looks like they are alive.
They appear to be created by some very great and proffesional artist,
iam from india and here the artists are very great and they feel the magic of artists and work done by them …
I really enjoy that the paintings all depict the fairy in an everyday human environment. They are right there, in all the places we are, not hidden far away from us in storybook locations.
The vivid colors add a playfulness that reminds us how light and airy the fairy is, despite her being stationary on the object in the painting.
These are just lovely.
Great collection, I love the way that you put these whimsical fairies in with everyday objects. They’re really well done, I love the colors and detail! Vanity fairy is probably my favorite.
They’re adorable! I think I like the “Playing in the Rain” best. It’s good to remind us that fairies are all around us!!!
The paintings seem to tell a little story of there own, they are very mystical and magical.

I love the Vanity fairy. The idea of looking at yourself in the car mirror is funny to think about because we all do it. Your usage of common items/objects seen in everyday life is also quite interesting. The drain, the car, and a mailbox are everyday objects so it is easy to connect to. Well done!

That’s wonderful job.. i love those fairies since i feel they have some magical power to mesmerize anyone… they are adorable.. great.. keep it up..
urban fairy painting is taken up by not many people. It requires a lot of imagination. The paintings posted clearly reveal the ideas of the painter. They are so delicately painted showing the innocence of the fairies in all the pics.you has painted them small to give give them the fairy look as per my vision. This art says a lot.
I love how whimsical these painting are, and at times the fairies seem so thoughtful and reserved like in Traffic Light Fairie and The Letter.
Very beautiful.
I love how you connected the imaginary with the real. It seems like they are really there. This is what I call art…
The amount of details you have invested into those individual fairies to bring about their human nature simultaneously with those fairy wings seem astonishing. With just those outstanding wings extra, you have created a balance between the fairies and their everyday human activities, you have taken the pictures to the realm of fantasy while retaining every normal human aspect of it down to the spectacle wearing fairy.
I like these, they’re creative and fun. Reminds me of Finding Neverland, you know, not suppressing the child inside us.
I find this artwork to be creatively done and the style and color of the artwork captures the magical nature of the fairy well. I like the various backdrops used and how the backdrops blend the real world with the fantasy world. Keep up the creative work!
beautiful artwork. i especially like high wire fairies. very nice
hi. thanks for reading my fairy squidoo, it would seem that they are also urban fairies.
i am amused. it really is a small world. and it took twitter to squeeze us togeather.
i also did interior design for years, i was a furniture designer for some time, i had/have a hammock and outdoor furniture business. and i have been a full time artist.in fact the background of my twitter thing is one of the 3d boiler cement elephants that i did.
