Kicking the SUGAR Habit by Nadine, N.D., C.N.S.

Hello, hello.  Can you believe it is December????  I am simply astonished as to how fast 2012 has evaporated.  Our last conversation centered around the pitfalls of sugar with a desired outcome that everyone could strive for a holiday season or a life filled with health and vitality!

We continue with a few ideas on how to kick a sugar habit (thank you LeAnne for your online request).  I am by no means the end all voice on this topic.  What I can and will do, is share a bit of knowledge along with personal experience in an effort to open a door for you to explore possibilities in your own world.

I have discovered that sugar affects me, (a body), emotionally, mentally, physically and spiritually.  As a spiritual being in a physical body, I am here to do my work!  I am a Warrior, a Teacher, and a Healer; and have learned over many years of sugar abuse, that when sugar is IN my physical body, my spirt is NOT! Simply put, I am spiritually comatose.  One case in point:  I would close my eyes to do a meditation and fall asleep immediately (usually drooling on myself).  Along my journey, as I became more spiritually grounded, awake, and aware, I discovered that to be IN my body, to do the work I have come to do, I had to make the choice to give up sugar.  I will admit, it has been well worth the choice.  However, in the beginning my initial reaction was…

Easier Said Than Done!!!!!

or maybe not

If you have attempted this course of action in your own life, you are aware of the little voice or little gremlin that sits on ones shoulder and whispers crapola into ones ears.  Then before one knows it, one is feeding that voice.  Argh!!!  The voice speaks to the mental body (which argues, defends, denies, validates, praises, etc); as well as the emotional body (which feels); then to the physical body (which takes action).

There are so many things I have tried.  What I can share with you are ones I truly feel have allowed me to be SUCCESSFUL in kicking my sugar habit then nut addiction.  These are in no particular order.  Some were tried multiple times before I mastered them.  I will say that I feel I had the most success after the addition of a few supplements in my world.  So allow me to address those first.

  • To Stop the Voice:  5-hydroxy-tryptophan (5-HTP) is a neurotransmitter compound created in the body which is used to regulate serotonin levels in the brain and central nervous system.  This supplement changed my life!  Although medical journals and reviews state that 5-HTP has only been proven to help improve sleep patterns, elevate moods of depression and help with panic attacks, I personally discovered that 5-HTP STOPPED THE VOICE!  For me, the voice/gremlin always sat on my right shoulder.  It was almost as if I could see the message being sent come out of a doorway behind me, circle around my right side, to land smack dead in front of me.  I would then argue with that bloody voice doing my best to shut it out.  Before taking 100mg of 5-HTP three times a day, I would find myself acting out that message, physically taking action, resulting in a repeat of old behavior.  For ME, Nadine, this supplement STOPPED THE VOICE dead in it’s track.  At that point, I was then able to say STOP and MAKE A DIFFERENT CHOICE.  I began taking 5-HTP in January to kick my addiction to nuts/nut butters.  Within a few bottles, I no longer felt a pull or desire for nuts.  These days I can even when walk down the PB aisle in a store and be around bags of nuts.  I stopped taking this supplement when I felt free internally.  Many of my clients report huge success as well.  I trust you too will delight in your own freedom.
  • To Stop a Craving:  anytime you have a craving you can combine 2 TBS Protein Powder + 2 TBS Glutamine powder in water, as a shake.  This combination will KILL the craving and allow your hormones to balance.  This has been a powerful find.  Many of my clients reported they craved their ‘addiction’ when it got dark, or when they were bored.  By making this little shake, thus stopping the craving in its tracks, new choices were made which enhanced new behaviors.
  • Preload before the Lions Den:  if you know you will be going into an environment, loaded with the foods you are wanting to avoid you can preload your body with a combination of Protein + Fiber +Fat.  Specifically 1 scoop of Protein powder (egg white is always my choice) + 1 scoop of Psyllium Husks (a scoop is usually 1 tsp) + either 7 walnut halves or ½ TBS of Flaxseed Oil.  This combination will fill you up and send a message to your brain that you are satisfied.  This combo has been a lifesaver on many an occasion.  Note: psyllium husks tend to thicken so mix and drink before that happens.
  • Stay Hydrated:  hand to mouth disease, as I call it, can be alleviated dramatically if you stay hydrated with water!.  Should you find yourself reaching for junk, drink 16-32 oz of pure water.  Notice the difference in your mind and body.
  • Flavor Crusher:  brushing your teeth as well as our tongue will provide a change in pattern, allowing you to make a wiser choice than reaching for food.  If you use a mint flavor here, you may also find your spirit has been uplifted.

Those methods are very effective for the mental and physical challenges we face when kicking a habit.  What of the emotional roller coaster we find ourselves on?  I was raised in numerous dysfunctional households.  Food was rarely used as nourishment, rather it was used to punish, tease, teach and then to reward.  Many times there was an extreme lack of food then an over abundance of sugary gooey items.  It is no surprise I, among many of you, might have very mixed emotions around food.

How many times do we eat out of fear, excitement, anger, disillusion, expectation, release, relief, lack, over stimulation, or boredom?.  We WANT but we don’t know WHAT it is we want.  Years ago, during a group therapy session, I was asked this question “what does it FEEL LIKE when you are eating ice-cream?”  Honestly, I had no freekin idea.  I could think my way out of anything, however at that point in my life I could not FEEL at all.  It took me really exploring that question, especially while I was eating ice-cream, to discover it froze everything as it made its way through my body.  And in the freezing, I did not have to look at what was going on.  I did not have to participate in life.  Once the aha happened, change happened. I have been free of that particular habit since 1993.  Was it easy?  Hell no!!!  However, I grew with each challenge and each SUCCESS.  I learned in 2005 that eating frozen yogurt suddenly lead to the desire to eat ice-cream so I made a choice to let that go as well.  I choose to live.  I choose to be healthy.  I choose to leave the frozen, numbing device behind.  The major point here is, before I or you, can shift in the emotional body, we must discover what it feels like when we are consuming our individual ‘hell’ food.  When you achieve your aha, change will follow!

Be Easy on Yourself

Be Easy on Yourself

Here are a few ideas you might like to try as you explore your own emotional reasons for indulging in your deadly friend.

  • Keep a Journal:  Keep track of when you are most likely to eat emotionally.  Does it happen at a particular time of day, say once it is dark?  Does it happen in a specific place, say in front of the TV?  Does it happen around specific people, environments, or situations?  Once you have that key information you are once again empowered to go for a walk, read a book, call a friend, doing something different to break the cycle.
  • Let it Rip:  one method that works wonders to release some pent up energy should you find you have been eating over anger, disappointment, disillusion, etc, is to beat a plastic bat over a leather or hard plastic covered pillow/cushion.  A person can really get into 15 minutes of pillow/cushion beating.  The sound is amazing as is the energy released.  Once the emotion is OUT of the body, there is no need to feed it.  Plastic bats can be found in a toy store.  Cushions or large pillows from a couch or chair work wonders.
  • Internal Dialog:  Ask yourself how you FEEL when you are eating your killer food. Once you can find the reasons, you are then empowered to make different choices.
  • Discover Holes:  Look for holes in your nutrition.  Become aware of whether you are wanting specific textures (chewy, crunchy, creamy, sour etc).  I am a crunchy person and am now satisfied to eat jicama or an apple rather than nuts.  What is your texture??  Where might there be holes in your nutrition?
  • STOP!  Breathe!  Choose!: This is another of those lifesavers for me.  Whenever you find yourself thinking or acting on a thought or urge, literally say STOP out loud to yourself.  BREATHE, now CHOOSE a new action.  As an example, you are walking down the aisle of the store, find yourself reaching for cookies.  STOP!  BREATHE! Now turn around and go down a different aisle or walk out of the store.
  • Ask:  Ask for what you WANT!!  Sometimes, we find our selves eating a bag of chips or cookies when what we really want is to vent our frustrations.  We don’t want anyone to solve them, we simply want the opportunity to say them out loud, to get them out of our body.  Sometimes we want physical closeness in the form of a HUG,yet rather than ask for that, we bury that emotional/physical need in food.  What would it be like for you to enter a room, ask for everyones attention, then ask them to simply validate YOU.  It might sound like them applauding your wonderful efforts for five minutes while you bask in all that wonderful validating attention.  99% of the time I have ASKED for something from another, I have RECEIVED IT!

I am sure there are a vast number of other approaches one can explore to kick a sugar habit.  I’ve shared some of my knowledge and experience with you.  The most powerful key since kicking my sugar and nut addiction is complete abstinence.  I have learned that I am no longer clean (or sober if you will) if I have even one lick or one bite.  It is no different than an alcoholic.  They are sober until the first drink, tongue dip, finger dip, shot etc crosses their mouth.  I am clean and free when I completely abstain.

The ball is now in your court.  GO FOR IT BABY!!  Discover what makes you tick as you kick your addictive habit.  May you have EASE and FREEDOM along your journey.  Embracing you with much love and enthusiasm.  Your comments will be read should you choose to share.

you are so very welcome Leila. As we shift into the New Solstice energy, folks will find they are no longer able to tolerate eating things they could even a few weeks ago. The body will revolt. more about this later…

You are welcome LeAnne… I was asked today to have the next article be around helping parents prevent sugar abuse with their kids.. so the kids are presented with other options and do not have to deal with ‘addictive’ behavior/choices… So will let you know when that one is ready….

  5. Karen says:

great article…I had to give up sugar 5 years ago because of a Candida overgrowth. Not just sugar, but also dairy, wheat, sweet fruits and a lot of other foods that turn into sugar and feed Candida. It’s a challenging diet to follow, and I will probably have to endure it all my life, but giving up sugar has given me my health back.
There are so many foods that I cannot eat, and nuts, usually almonds, are a staple. You mentioned having to give up nuts..do you mind if I ask why?I always thought they were healthy (in moderate amounts).

Thanks Dr.Nadine for the informative article.
Since I gave up using sugar during the world shortage, early seventies,I feel much better without it. Whenever I take food with sugar it feels like a dangerous substance being ingested with the cosequence of upsetting my body, mind and soul.I advised many of my friends and family members to stay away from sugar. They are very gratefull for my advise.
There is only one way to do it and that is to gradually reduce the intake to ZERO if it cannot be elimnated immediately.

  7. Nadine says:

Karen… Thanks so much for sharing a bit of your story. You asked me specifically about nuts… I discovered that I do not have a shutoff switch. I would be good and have 1 almond. then suddenly I have 4 in my mouth.. then my hand is going for a handful… then I’m at the bottom of the bag. I tried shifting to soaking them, since that opens more enzymes… yet I still found myself over eating them.

As a competitive bodybuilder…. eating off my contest plan is not advisable and does not allow me to achieve my personal goals. So rather than fight myself.. I chose to give them up. There may come a day when I can bring them safely into my home.. Today is not that day.

btw… on the candida issue… you have removed some really good items. Well done.. you CAN bring IN Sauerkraut… it is wonderful to nourish your body and does not feed candida. Congrats Karen..

Thank you for your comments Shahin… I agree, remove it gradually… then take it to ZERO.

There was a movie I watched that had beings from other planets. On THEIR planet, sugar was considered a POISON. Everyone KNEW it was a POISON and didn’t go anywhere near it. But on planet earth it was considered a ‘goodie’… it was very enlightening to view that response from a being from another world.

THANK YOU ALL FOR SHARING…. You have made my day!!!’
