Janet Marshall – New Zealand Native Birds

.

Janet Marshall – Biography

.

Janet Marshall

I am a New Zealand artist specialising in birds, botanical and portrait paintings.

I have been painting professionally since 1970, when I illustrated 3 x Field guides to NZ birds. These were followed by a series of Limited edition reproductions through the 1970-80s.

I have had my work represented on 13 NZ Post stamps, including the 2008 Game Bird Habitat Stamp.

I have written and illustrated 10 books, including a garden diary called Images of a Garden, and 5 children’s books, which include a NZ ABC with pictures and poems called K is for Kiwi.

My work has been represented in many other publications, including books, magazines, stationery etc.

.

.

I am a regular exhibitor at the NZ Academy of Fine Arts and a finalist in many awards exhibitions in NZ, including the NZ Adam Portraiture awards.

In 2006 I built and published online KIDS FOR BIRDS, an interactive website on birds for children. This site includes many pictures and art resources for children to print out and use. KIDS FOR BIRDS can be accessed through my website at: http://www.janetemarshall.co.nz/kids

For as far back as I can remember I wanted to be an artist. My love of nature lead me to portray birds and flora, starting in the late 1960s through to today.

I paint in a realistic style. This method of painting has opened many peoples eyes to the detailed beauty of nature, something that most people do not see. When they see this detail in a painting, people tend to look closer when they look again at a plant or bird.

2009 has been a time for plants to paint and I am currently in the process of painting a series of NZ Flower Fairies.

Please enjoy my work.

These birds are just BEAUTIFUL! I love the way each one fits in with the particular background they are in and part of. I find them so real yet also so fanciful as if they are “fairytale birds”, each with it’s own message that stirs the emotions.

    Lovely!

Thank you for sharing such excellent and touching work,
    Karla

Thank you everyone for taking the time to look at my work. I do appreciate your comments.
I am so glad Karla, that you see what I always hope to put into my paintings. I have always felt one with everything, down to a blade of grass a mountain, and have tried to illustrate the beauty of nature and the endless tiny worlds within worlds that are there for us all the time, but which many are unaware of.
There is a stillness in these worlds that enhances life for all who see them.
    Namaste, Janet

Paintings? Got to be joking! They are so good… looks like real life photography… the details, unbelieveable ! A treat to watch and yes, I was transported from this world of concrete jungle to the beauty of nature.. in far far away New Zealand.

Thanks for sharing these wonderful paintings with us !

  9. Doroteja says:

Beautiful paintings. Though, as many have pointed out, they are so realistic they could be mistaken for photography. The work is beautifully detailed, but my favorite part is the rich and vibrant colors. It seems that every time I look through them again I find something new, some hidden detail that enhances the entire picture. As simple as the scenes may seem the paintings are very complex. Obviously this beautiful work is a national pride.

    Janet,

I love your paintings! Your birds fondly remind me of my grandmother’s home as a child, which was full of bird activity in the courtyard. Although they are not the same birds, it still gives me a warm feeling.

  15. Peter says:

I am amazed by the amount of detail that these paintings of birds exhibit! The birds really look as if they have individual feathers, just like in real life. I also like the variety of birds that appear in the paintings and how they are so perfectly presented in their natural environments. The variety of angles are nice too and capture the birds both in flight and at rest. Just looking at these beautiful birds provides me with a sense of peace.

  17. nate says:

These works are truly one of a kind. What I’m referring to is how touches of darker hues in some of the paintings and lighter misty-like noise give the paintings depth and make them amazingly lifelike. They make one want to get out and enjoy the marvels of nature.
