The term “right livelihood” refers to the practice of earning one’s living doing work one was born to do. It’s a more spiritual way of life than many people live and it’s a more practical way of life as well.
Chapter 17 in my book, How to Attract Money Using Mind Power, is titled “Right Livelihood.” Here’s the quote I use to open that chapter:
“Right livelihood is an idea about work which is linked to the natural order of things.”
–Dr. Marsha Sinetar, Do What You Love, the Money Will Follow, 1987
To expand on the definition of right livelihood, we can say it is work which is in line with one’s natural abilities and talents, deep interests, or passions. You’ll tend to perform best in, and most enjoy working in, fields and professions you’re best suited to and most attracted to.
People can do spiritual, psychological and even physical harm to themselves by doing work they are not suited to; by doing work they do not find enjoyable and which they find boring or unpleasant and for which they have no passion; by doing work which does not feed their souls or help them to grow; by doing work which is not in line with their natural abilities, their talents, their interests or their passions.
None of this changes the fact that it is admirable when people do jobs they dislike and are not suited to in order to provide for themselves and those who depend on them financially. It’s often the responsible thing to do. It’s often expected of one. It’s often a wonderful expression of love and dedication.
Be all that as it may, it doesn’t change the fact that those working in lines of work not in harmony with what they are made of are doing themselves a great disservice—especially if they have resolved themselves to doing that work indefinitely or for their whole working lives.
Such people would do well to begin to seek out their right livelihoods and to strive to grow into those expressions. Granted, this can be quite a challenge, and especially when prevailing economic conditions are less than ideal. Still, by using metaphysical techniques to attract work we are meant to do we can attract that work regardless of economic conditions and other such factors.
The question itself of what our right livelihood may be is not always an easy one to answer. And our right livelihood, as such, can be different for us at different times in our lives. Work we do at one time can prepare us for work we are to do at a later time. Right livelihood work now or in the past can be indispensible training and preparation for right livelihood work yet to come.
If you ever find yourself in the position of having to choose between work you feel you are best suited to and work you most want to do, lean towards doing the work you most want to do. It is likely the essence of your very being which is prompting you with the desire to move in a certain direction.
With a strong enough desire to do some work you are not well suited to, you can rise above your lack of natural ability or talent and do well in a field you are divinely inspired to enter into.
The process of attracting money has a lot to do with how we think and feel. If you want to attract a lot more money than you’ve been attracting, it’s important that you think and feel in harmonious, productive, ways. Expressing these high vibrations of thought and feeling is actually an important part of the process of attracting money.
If you are working forty or so hours per week doing something which you dislike, which makes you think and feel negatively, you are existing in low vibrations of thought and feeling. Despite all your efforts to grow financially through hard work and determination, you are working against the natural, harmonious, flow of universal energy. As a result you are undermining your financial success in the long term.
Here’s another quote I use in my chapter on right livelihood:
“Right livelihood has within itself its own rewards; it deepens the person who practices it.”
–Michael Phillips, The Seven Laws of Money, 1974
Seek out and do the things you love to do and are drawn to do, whether or not you can earn money doing them at this time. Do them as a hobby. Do them as a labor of love. And all along, think about and stay alert for ways you may be able to transition into earning money doing these things. You may end up being very surprised at how the universe can move things around so that it can put you exactly where it wants you and needs you.
In this series of articles you have been learning mind-power techniques which can be used to attract money. These techniques are very powerful, even when used individually. The techniques are so powerful that you can attract a lot more money using just one or a few of them. In other words, you can attract a lot more money into your life whether or not you are engaged in your right livelihood. But, you will never know the joy of living the life you were meant to live; you will never be as fulfilled or happy as you could otherwise be.
To attain what I consider true success in this life, you must find a way to add value to the world. You can best do that by serving people in the way you were born to do; by doing what the universe prompts you to do. There is something in this life that needs to be done, and which you can do better than anyone else. Somewhere there is a place in which you will be a perfect fit. It’s your job to find that place.
