Stress and the Power of Your Mind by Georgia Foster

Many people feel too embarrassed to admit they are stressed because they may appear weak or incapable. Imagine being able to change your thinking and feelings so that you weren’t so stressed and were ready to take on whatever happens knowing that the end result would be fine. We all feel stressed from time to time, it is a part of life. How we cope with it makes the difference.

Your Mind holds the key.

The deeper part of the mind stores all the emotional responses including how you deal with stress. When you are stressed your mind will scan recent coping responses. If these responses were feelings of panic or fear, perhaps wanting to overeat, drink too much or feel angry, it will assume this is your correct response – even though it is unhelpful. Your mind will continue to respond with these negative reactions until you provide it with new coping strategies that support you positively.

As your unconscious mind manages your bodily functions when you feel stressed it produces stress chemicals and this combination makes you feel out of control. When you feel calm you produce endorphins and these bring about feel good sensations. One of the most important things to remember about your responses to life is that you cannot produce stress chemicals and calm endorphins at the same time. You have to make a choice.

What is so amazing about the mind/body connection is that it with a little bit of practice you can learn how to produce calm thoughts and feelings as your strategy for life, no matter what comes your way. An optimistic and calm mind resolves problems easily and allows you to put life into a healthier perspective.

Change Your Thinking! It just takes practice

Negative thinking is a learned behaviour. I call it the Inner Critic. It’s that nagging inner voice that makes you feel stressed and out of control in certain situations. It says things like ‘You’re hopeless.’ ‘You’re not coping as well as everybody else’ or ‘Everybody is slimmer, happier, and healthier than you.’ This voice if you believe it to be true will undermine your emotional health and wellbeing. It holds you back from being an active positive participant in your life

The Inner Critic is the voice of doom and gloom and it will predict all these negative scenarios, just in case they might happen and of often if you believe this voice to be true you will expect a stressful result. This in itself creates more negative thinking and often leads to procrastination or not attempting at all to do things you want to do because you just say to yourself ‘What is the point’!

The Inner Critic is the catalyst to anxiety and depression and it will, if you let it go wild convince you that your most amazing hopes and dreams will be difficult to achieve. The domino effect of this thinking is that you start to question yourself and your life and when this occurs your self esteem goes down and your stress levels go up!

The good news the Inner Critic is not the truth and it will never be able to predict your future, because it doesn’t have the ability to be your own personal psychic! It only works on negative energy which will keep you in a place of self doubt.

The great news is that there is another powerful positive part that represents the opposite energy that is called The Healthy Confident part. This part has incredible resources to produce positive conversations in your head that are supportive, kind and creative. This part is full of energy, clarity and intuition.

The Healthy Confident part knows how to produce calming endorphins, so as soon as you start to dialogue positively within yourself, even for just 5 minutes a day your body will respond with these calming sensations. As your body will be relaxed, your mind will become more trusting in the journey of your life, irrespective of your past and what is going on in your life right now.

The Healthy Confident part is the inner voice that has the right be your strongest voice irrespective of your past. Remember you can’t change your past but you can prepare for a fun and exciting future. The Healthy Confident part is the energy within that with practice can guide you through even the mostifficult times, so that you are feeling intuitively more confident to make healthier decisions about what is right for you and what is not. The more you are in this calm, confident state the more your mind and body are learning that it is safe to be you now and in your future.

Top Tip

The Inner Critic causes stress, which sends the body into panic mode. When this occurs people shallow breathe which makes it very difficult to calm down.

A simple tool when you are feeling stressed or having an Inner Critic attack is to take a deep breath in and hold for 5 seconds, then release the breath and hold for 5 seconds. Repeat this 3 times. At the same time say silently to yourself on each breathe in positive statements such as ‘I am safe’ or ‘I am calm and confident.’

This technique lowers your heart rate and calms you down. Your unconscious mind then learns that breathing deeply in stressful situations is the answer rather than panic. By practising this tool you are giving yourself space and time to de-stress in stressful situations. The more you use this breathing technique the more it will become your natural de-stress response.

Another great tip is to do daily hypnosis – it is the same as meditation and just as powerful. It is a wonderful time when your eyes are closed where you can bring in positive thoughts and feelings no matter how crazy they may seem. It only takes five minutes a day to see the difference. The more you practice positive outcomes the more your mind assumes it to be true. This is a Universal Law. Seeing in your mind over and over again great things happening to you, your mind will believe it to be true and will enact upon those experiences naturally.

Those who regularly take time out of their busy life by experiencing hypnosis will be learning how to de-stress on a regular basis just simply by imagining positive outcomes over and over again. As the Dalai Lama was purported to say ‘If every child from the age of seven practiced daily meditation the world would be in a much better place.’ Aint that the truth!

I enjoyed this article very much. Giving parts of ourselves names seems to help identify states which might make it easier to access them. Thanks.

I would go as far to say that “anxiety and depression” are simply “products” of the Inner Critic.

  3. This is very much in the same vein as Eckhart Tolle’s “The Power of Now”.
The daily practice of meditation of stillness is the best way to start our lives.

    It works!

  6. Thanks for the article, it’s great. I have also discovered that there are studies that show that if you sit with nature or even an image of nature for 5 mins a day this will decrease your stress levels, so I combined your breathing exercise with looking at an image of nature and it is amazing, it really works.
I have a blog called “Healing Art” at http://juliaharwood.blogspot.com/
I will add a link to this article there.
    Thankyou.
