What Does a Thought Weigh?

I have often struggled with ideas that can communicate the power of a single thought. Our brains have been labeled as the 3 pound universe and in many ways this is totally appropriate. But if our brains only weigh three pounds and we have literally millions and millions of thoughts stored somewhere, what does a thought weigh? That seems like kind of a non-sense inquiry-but wait a minute.

It has been estimated that we think some 60,000 thoughts every day. In addition to our thoughts, we handle tens of thousands of bits of information as a result only of external stimuli. Others have approximated the amount of negative information each of us process to be representative of at least 90% of the stimuli we process. Indeed, I would add that for many, the vast majority of their inner thoughts are also negative.

Now if you think of our 3 pound universe that way, then how much does all of the negativity weigh? Perhaps the true weight loss program we should all endeavor to maintain is the one that’s aimed at losing those negative thought patterns. All of the no-don’t, you can’t, you’ll never succeed at that, etc. and so forth. In other words, every self-limiting, self-imposed notion that proscribes what we will try and how well we will do at it. This is the kind of weight loss that applies to most of us.

The role the subconscious plays in limiting one’s success, in motivating their buying patterns, in establishing their beliefs, in fact–in literally every aspect of one’s life cannot be understated. Indeed, the evidence is in: the subconscious instructs the conscious what to do, what to say, when to act and more and it does so as much as 60 seconds before the conscious mind responds. The mind is very much like a large container that you can fill with anything you want, but then that input becomes it program. Years ago I likened this to the old computer programmers GIGO meaning Garbage In Garbage Out.

Most of us desire to change something. We want to improve our lives in some way. Change-that seems to be the theme of the day everywhere. During this last election cycle I found myself doing several radio interviews regarding subliminal communication and the art of persuasion. There were subliminal ads aimed at both political parties and there were a number of other psychological techniques employed to gain your vote, but then there’s nothing new about that. What did impress me was the number of people on both sides who were just totally fired up about the election. There was a new level of energy, a higher sense of enthusiasm and as a result, some deeper divides. Passion-that is the word I would use to describe this last presidential election; passion on both sides of the aisle.

Pundits for both sides had plenty to say but ultimately everything came down to one word– “change.” The dynamics of the election were such that change was virtually assured in some way regardless of who emerged victorious. Change is what the world wanted as well, and change is what the world celebrated when President Obama was chosen by Americans. Our time now is a time of change and change is what we want and change is what most people resist when it gets right down to it. Change is actually attenuated by fear-fear of the unknown.

My staff has asked me over the years about our products and our philosophy. Whenever I am asked this question I think of Bill Gates and his book, “Business at the Speed of Light.” Gates explains in this book how the railroad companies used to think of themselves as in the business of trains. Had they recognized that their business was transportation, there would have been a different future in front of them then that of trains alone.

Whether it’s about business or a matter of a more personal nature, change begins in the mind. Real change is not possible until there is agreement between the subconscious and the conscious mind. Claiming your right to succeed consciously may well be later undermined by unconscious/subconscious beliefs, motives and mechanisms.

Think for a moment, what would you like to change? If you could change anything about yourself, what would it be? What would you change that is changeable? Would you like more energy and enjoy feeling and looking much younger? Would you like a greater sense of inner peace? Would you benefit from a better memory or an enhanced learning ability? Would you like to improve or attract a relationship in your life? Would you like to find the perfect employment? Would you like to change your body image or end some addiction? Or how about becoming fitter and/or more athletic? Again, what would you change?

My research over the past 30 years has repeatedly verified a simple hypothesis. In order to truly change-you must change your mind.

It is true if you want something to change, you must change the way you think about it. Then it will change.

It would be so much easier to get what we want, if we’d just stop fighting — OURSELVES! We’re surely our own worst enemy when it comes to self-improvement, aren’t we? We berate ourselves, yell at ourselves inwardly and convince ourselves that our lives are just awful and we don’t know what to do about it.

I really think that one of the best ways to get out of those habits is to simply relax. Using a meditation CD helps immensely. I have done this myself and after awhile, there was a visible change in me, in my attitude and in my thinking.

Calmness produces clarity and clarity is positive. So I say, calm down, relax and you will automatically stop beating yourself up over things that don’t matter. The only thing that really matters is to feel a sense of joy and peace. You can get that feeling, if you calm down and “see” the beauty that this world really holds for you.

Truthfully, if not for meditation CDs, I don’t think I could have accomplished that state of mind…

Thanks for this article. I had an opportunity not long ago to change my life; I wanted this change, asked for this change, desired this change. At the last minute, when the opportunity for me to allow this change in my life occurred, I allowed fear to hold me back and closed myself to the opportunity – because I was afraid. I regret this decision. And now I have to start all over. But I’ve learned from this. Regardless of how much we ask for something we have to be ready for it too. I guess at the time I just wasn’t ready. So I’m working on not only my intentions, but on what is really right and best for me. I know I will get to where I need to be.

It destroys nations and its killing nature and upsetting the balance
of the universe , never have I seen a heavy mind sleep ,relax

THERE IS NO WE, PLEASE! Use of the “we” makes you a sheep-not me.
“we handle tens of thousands of bits of information as a result only of external stimuli. Others have approximated the amount of negative information each of us process to be representative of at least 90% of the stimuli we process.”
It depends on YOU what you choose to perceive, to a larger or lesser extent. You do not have to live in a city, nor own a television, nor enter a supermarket, nor watch adverts for white clothes, nor use a mobile phone…WHO has done the estimating of “our” brains but the very people who are average, otherwise they would not do this.
Change and Obama-but this was brain washing, Clinton said the same thing. It is a vague vague word. Absolutely be prepared to change your perspective in every conscious moment but dont listen to politicians who want to do it for all “us” sheep-WHO WROTE THIS ARTICLE SHELDON TAYLOR?

Indeed, I would add that for many, the vast majority of their inner thoughts are also negative.

There is a way to catch your thoughts and then decide what to do with them. Even if you see that you do not like what you think or do, unless you see what is happening, how can tell whether you want it in your life or not. The way to see is mathematical. Everyone has 168 hours a week.
That is 24 X 7. Now divide that in two. That is 84 hours a week. The first 84 goes towards sleeping, eating, dressing, etc. The essentials that you do each day. It’s the second 84 hours that you need to view.

Lets say you work 40 hours a week. Lets say it takes 10 hours a week to communite. That is 50 hours subtracted from 84 is 34 hours a week left. What exactly do you do for 34 hours a week? This is the key to making changes in your life.

Even if you find that you only have 5 hours a week to do anything you wanted tha

  7. Scarlett says:

Even if you find that you only have 5 hours a week to do anything you wanted that you are not doing now – you will create a change which will create a chain reaction. If you started to play a guitar 5 hours a week that would be 20 hours a month. You could learn to play a song rather well. If you listened to a hypnosis tape or a meditation tape for 5 hours a week, 20 hours a month, you could break a habit or improve a mind skill. In other words, it doesn’t take much but you have to find yourself, you have to document your time and see exactly how your subconscience mind is directing you. Once you do then you will be able to make the changes consciously and start directing from both minds. Then take each day of the week and document it. You will see that it is the same each week. Once you get a hold of one week of your time, you will master your entire year and your entire life. Then if gets fun because you start to run your life the way you want it to be.

Tell me you are a genius, with a high degree of education.
But if all you can do is to criticize and live on your own world without having care with others. Then, the education that you got and the powers that within you is useless.
Let it flow and it touch people.
Let it heal.Let it cross the barriers.
We are all jedi…and we are here for a purpose.
And we can transforms other people by fighting our own weakness.
    Our ego.
    Our greediness.
    Our lust.
Only then,we could be a bearer of light that helps the weak to foolow the right path.
