The Madness of the Creative Process

We pop into life the way
Particles pop in and out
Of the continuum.
We are a seething mass
Of probability.
And probably I love you.
The evil of larva
And the evil of stars
Is a formula for the future.
Some bodies can
Thrust their arms into
a flame and be instantly
cured of this world,
while others sicken.
Why think, little brother
Like the moon, spit out like
A broken tooth.
“Oh,” groans the world.
The outer planets,
The fizzing sun, here we come
With our luggage.
Look at the clever things
We have made out of
A few building blocks—
O, fabulous continuum.
Ruth Stone (1915-)
Within the moments of this 19 minute video of a talk given at TED, Eat Pray Love Author Elizabeth Gilbert speaks about the time she spent with Ruth Stone, and Ruth Stone’s description of her creative process. I won’t attempt to try and describe it here -- somehow I sense that I will not come close to doing it justice.

Fascinating perspective!!! This is a “rational” and socially acceptable explanation for the often alluded gift of psychics and/or channels who claim to have received their awesome works of art from an outside source. Saying a book has been “channeled” is not accepted outside the metaphysical circles… yet is this just not another version of the same thing…. AND SO TRUE!?!?!
I am outside the US and had never heard of Elizabeth Gilbert… I am going to remedy that right now.

Certainly has helped me review my perception of the creative process and that it is perhaps a more humbling experience than most people would acknowledge. A process which should earn our heartfelt gratitude.

I loved the bit where she says the creative process is capricious and can drive you to despair. And then she says if we just show up and do our thing that’s all we can do. We can’t take responsibility for something as awesome as desiring God to show up too. Thanks.
wow, Ms Gilbert is incredible. I do not know of her work but I too was humbled to tears by her words, her heart. My favorite phrase right now is “just to simply show up” and my favorite word is “synchronicity”….very inspirational and insightful…thank you for sharing!!
Wow!! Amazing way of speaking the truth of the soul and heart! Having incredible gifts of any artistic background is always a gift that has been ‘passed’ to us from others. I was incredibly impressed with Ms Gilbert’s description of “Me, Myself and I”. In life, everyone is held back by their own ego; it is this ego that can ruin dreams or promote them. Ms. Gilbert description of how we should believe that the “Spirit or God” in all of us should be seen as seperate helps us to always find graditude in all things; thereby preventing us from complaining and becoming self centered and egotistical. Very simple concept that very few understand and yet fewer practice. Being thankful for our gifts in life means we will think more positively about our life and its possiblities; thereby putting negativity aside and complaining less. Beautiful concept! Ms. Gilbert’s gift is a blessing, and she should never feel withdrawn by doing a magnificent job of writing beautiful words. It is only the negativity of others who are being negative. Listen to your own inner voice more and ignore others! Love your work!

With much admiration and appreciation.
Just looking at this from a musical perspective, I have to say I have a very different view. I wouldn’t find it necessarily a burden to channel creativity, it’s more like pure bliss. You are channeling the energy of the world and everyone in it, and mostly the entire experience of your life. They say what you play is the sum of who you are, And there’s no reason to be ashamed or afraid of that. Call it a daemon in the wall but I see it as a combination of your life experience and the energy of the world. But maybe it is different when writing a book.

I totally identify with Elizabeth’s way of viewing creativity or should I say referring back to the ancient greek view of the creative soul. We all have the potential to be creative and tap into the divine within us and work with the universal mind to bring our gifts to creation. Remaining in a state of harmony and balance whilst being grateful for the connection should keep our egos at bay.
