What Are NLP Anchors?

With reference to hypnosis and NLP, anchoring is a simple yet extremely powerful persuasion technique. But to limit its use exclusively to persuasion would be a mistake. Anchoring is a fundamental part of NLP that is the primary ingredient for many useful rapid-change procedures.

The roots of anchoring run throughout human history but were probably officially identified and explained with Pavlov’s experiments with dogs. During the 1890s scientist Ivan Pavlov was conducting gastric function experiments with dogs to gather information on digestion.

He discovered that dogs would produce saliva when in close proximity to meat, no surprise there. He then began to ring a bell as the dogs drooled. And finally he only needed to ring the bell to get the drooling response without offering the dogs any meat at all.

In Pavlov’s experiment the bell was the anchor that produced a predictable response, in this case, drooling. The same principle can be used for persuasion and many other desired outcomes for people seeking rapid behavioral changes. Obviously we don’t have time for days of conditioning with a subject, but we don’t really need a lot of time, only keen observation skills and understanding how anchoring works.

Build Rapport First Then Anchoring

Let’s say you’ve managed to establish rapport with someone, perhaps someone under your care in a hospital setting, though it could easily be almost anyone in any setting. You’re chatting away and notice the individual becomes particularly agreeable or open to direction when talking about a particular time, event or person in their life. It’s obvious that they just seem to give way to a resourceful state in another place in time. This is the perfect situation to set an anchor where you’ll be able to have access to that ‘cooperative’ internal resource in the future. Here’s how you might go about it.

When you notice a behavior you’d like to access in the future, you’ll want your subject to continue with it so you can set the anchor. In other words, you’re going to want to encourage the state with supportive conversation. While the individual is at the height of the desired state, you might tap them on the forearm or tug on your ear, or use a slightly unusual phrase with a different tonality than your usual voice.

What this does is creates an association from the anchor (the tap, unusual voice, etc.) to the desired state. And it’s important to make it somewhat unique so it’s not diluted by being something common or expected in the normal course of interaction. Then, in the future, when you’d like to access that agreeable or cooperative state of mind you simply need to employ the anchor you’ve set previously. If you’ve done a good job of anchoring that state, you’ll be amazed that your subject will revert almost immediately to the related state of mind or behavior.

I realize that tugging on your ear or tapping the individual’s forearm is not using verbal language to produce the desired result but with hypnosis and NLP, the term language is rather flexible. In fact, language is nothing more than a form of communication whether it be verbal or otherwise. Anchors allow NLP practitioners to access resourceful states in people and substitute or “install” those states in areas where an individual needs help.

Charles Steed has been a student of human development for more than 20 years and has written extensively on the topic. He’s been a master practitioner of NLP since 2002.

Do you ever have trouble motivating yourself to do the things you KNOW need to get done? Do you ever find yourself forgetting vital bits of information, like the names of people you’ve just met? And do you ever wonder if someone is telling you the truth, or if they may be lying about something?

I know this is going to sound incredible, and you may have a hard time believing it, but quite honestly, all of these situations can be improved when you learn the secrets of NLP.

Before I explain how easily NLP can be used to solve all of the above problems, let’s make sure that everyone reading this understands what we’re talking about. NLP stands for “Neuro-Linguistic Programming”, which is a science originally developed by Richard Bandler and John Grinder in the 1970s. As a science, NLP strives to explain, in the most direct way possible, why people do things. As a consequence to this, it also shows us how to accomplish many of the goals we have in normal, everyday life.

At it’s core, NLP helps us to learn how to access “resourceful states” of being, such as heighten memory, creativity, intelligence, and self-confidence. It also helps us to improve our communication with other people, which in turn helps us to be more persuasive. Let’s take a closer look at how we may use NLP to perform various “mind tricks”.

Accessing Resourceful States of Being

One of the most valuable tools NLP gives us is the ability to access resourceful states of being any time we wish. For instance, when we wish to remember people’s names and faces, we can use NLP to “turn on” our memory so it’s working at full capacity. Or if we’re faced with a serious problem, NLP tools are available to help us stay calm and centered as we elicit an effective “problem solving” resource state. And when we need to project a sense of confidence, NLP gives us the tools we need to adjust our level of confidence as easily as turning a dial.

In fact, there is a single NLP tool which may be used for all of these situations. It’s an advanced topic usually referred to as “anchors”. In NLP terms, an anchor is a word or action which acts as a trigger, activating an associated resource state.

A simple example of this would be when an athlete wears his “lucky shirt” to play well, or when someone puts a 4-leaf clover in their pocket to be more optimistic.

Using anchors to accomplish any goal is a simple 3-step process.

Step 1: Choose an anchor

This may actually be the most difficult of the 3 steps, because you want to select a word or action that you can “assign” to be a trigger for the desired resourceful state. Ideally, this will be something that is rarely done outside of the intended situations, but would seem normal and natural within them.

As an example, let’s say that you want to create an anchor which will activate your memory whenever you use it, such as at a party where you’ll meet dozens, or even hundreds of new people. You probably don’t want to create an anchor around the phrase, “be a computer”, although that may be perfectly okay when you want to remember facts and figures when you’re studying alone at home. For a party situation, a more appropriate anchor may be shaking someone’s hand, or even looking at the color of their eyes.

In some case, you may find that you already have usable anchors. For most people, standing up straight and smiling are anchors for confidence. If you notice that you tend to do something whenever you are naturally in the state you want to create an anchor for (confidence, in this case), then that behavior would make a perfect anchor.

Setp 2: Create a mental association between your anchor and desired resource state

This may, at first, SEEM difficult, but it’s actually quite simple. Essentially, all you do is elicit the resource state normally, and then do whatever you choose for your anchor.

Let’s go back to the confidence example here. In this situation, part 1 of this step is to elicit a feeling of confidence within yourself. For most people, the easiest way to do this is to remember a time when you felt very confident. If you can’t remember a time when you were confident, then remember a movie you saw where someone displayed lots of confidence, and pretend you are that person.

What gave you that feeling of confidence? Were you in control, or did you have any special insight into the situation around you? Were you doing something for which you had lots of experience? Did other people express acceptance, appreciation, or other emotion? Recall as much as you can about a situation in which you had lots of confidence.

Personally, one of the best memories to elicit a feeling of confidence would be when I worked as a photographer. I had lots of experience and training, and whenever I “got into the flow” of doing my work, I KNEW what to do every step of the way, and that gave me a solid feeling of confidence. I also had lots of memories of folks expressing appreciation and respect for the results I produced, and that gave me even more confidence. Most people have at least one situation like this in their lives.

If you want to get into really advanced techniques, you could turn your attention onto the feeling itself. Describe it as if it were a physical object. Imagine that you can see it, feel it, hear it, taste it, and smell it. Now, imagine it getting stronger and stronger, and as you do the feeling itself will grow within you.

When you feel the resourceful state very strongly, it’s time to start doing your chosen anchor. By repeating your anchor several times while in the resourceful state, your mind associates the 2 together, just like learning anything else.

Going back to our memory example, if I choose to use an anchor of shaking someone’s hand as an anchor for remembering people’s names, once I put myself into a state where my memory is strong, I would ideally have a friend with me to shake hands with as I focused on the feeling of having a good memory. Otherwise, I’d simply imagine myself shaking someone’s hand.

Actually, with the memory example, since it may be a bit difficult for most people to really get the “feeling” of having a strong memory, it is completely okay to imagine the whole thing — shaking someone’s hand and remembering their name. As they say, our inner minds cannot really tell the difference between a real event and one vividly imagined.

The more you repeat your anchor while in the desired resourceful state, the stronger it will become, and the better it will work when you need it.

Step 3: Apply your chosen anchor at an appropriate time

Now that you have created an anchor, the only thing left to do is to use it. In the case of remembering people’s names at a party, just realize that as you shake each person’s hand, your mind will automatically turn on your memory and store their name for easier recall.

If you created an anchor of saying the word, “Yes!” (with great enthusiasm) to elicit the resourceful state of confidence, then say it when you need a quick confidence boost.

As with anything else, your anchor will get stronger the more you use it, and you may want to go through the creation process periodically to further improve it.

I’m about to reveal something that almost no-one ever talks about. In fact, it’s something that almost no-one even KNOWS about. When you fully understand what I’m about to share with you in this report, your mind-power work will become 300% – 500% more effective.

To ensure that you fully understand the impact of what I have to share with you today, I need to cover some background material. You see, I don’t know what level of training you’ve had, and it’s always good to review the basics from time to time. So please bear with me as we go through this. You may find the way I phrase certain things gives you new insight into concepts and ideas you already knew. I tend to hear that a lot when I speak.

I once heard Zig Ziglar talk about how a famous football coach started each and every season the exact same way. He’d get in front of his players, hold up a football, and say, “Gentlemen, THIS is a football.” This famous coach was responsible for one of the longest running winning streaks in the history of the game. However, let’s start out review of the basics a little further along than that.

Basic Foundational Concepts
The basic concept behind all mind-power work is that the physical world around us is nothing more than a shadow compared to the unseen world which controls the physical plane. This unseen plane of existence is the source of all true Power, and is what we tap into whenever we focus our attention on creating any change in the physical world. Basic concept #1.

Basic concept #2 is that we direct this Power with our consciousness, which I will refer to as our “mind”. I say it this way to get around the debate about the role our emotions play in this process. Suffice it to say that our emotions must respond to our conscious choice, and thus our conscious choice is the originating cause of everything we do, mentally or emotionally.

Now, any time a ‘power’, or ‘force’, is used to create any kind of change, there is a basic principle that says the more intense that force, the more effectively the change will be made. Trying to push a car with only 10 horsepower of force won’t budge it, but apply 10,000 horsepower of force and the car will move rather quickly!

Related to this, the more FOCUSED the force is, the more intensely it operates in the specific situation. For example, a bullet sitting on a pile of dynamite will move rather quickly when the dynamite explodes, but a much smaller amount of gunpowder will shoot the bullet even more quickly because the force is focused in a specific direction. As another example, a sharp knife cuts more easily than a dull one because the force is applied across a smaller area.

With these basic concepts, we can easily see that in order to get the most from our mind-power work, we must be able to not only apply a greater force, but also apply it with the best focus we can muster.

The next basic concept I need to address here is that out of the various mental factors that relate to our ability to tap into Universal Power (thoughts, emotions, beliefs), it is our beliefs that have the greatest impact on the results we get. I know some people may disagree with this point, and since it is critical to what I have to share with you today, let’s review some of the evidence which supports this statement.

Why Beliefs Are Most Important To Your Mind-Power Work
I go into this in great detail in my book, Choose To Believe: A Practical Guide to Living Your Dreams (available on Amazon.com and PowerKeys Publishing), but for the sake of time, I want to just hit the highlights here.

Almost everyone these days refers to experiments in the field of quantum physics. One of the main reasons WHY is because those scientists are about as hard-nosed against mind-power as anyone on Earth! The fact that they’ve concluded that our expectations influence the outcome of any given event goes a long way towards proving that our beliefs have a direct connection to physical reality. Notice the word, ‘expectation’. That’s another way of saying ‘belief’.

And then there are all the experiments performed by Dr. Rhine at Duke University. Although his experiments failed to convince the world at large that psychic abilities exist, the results WERE statistically significant. Dr. Rhine noted in his logs that the belief that a subject had in the reality of psychic abilities was “the most telling factor” indicating the eventual outcome of an individual’s work, whether it was basic ESP or psychokinesis (mind over matter).

The final bit of evidence I’ll cover here is what’s known as “the placebo effect” in medical research. This has been defined as a healing response to a belief in the patient’s mind. In short, when a patient believes they are getting an effective treatment for a condition, the placebo effect kicks in and triggers a healing, regardless of the actual effectiveness of the treatment itself! There are some arguments to the effect that our entire traditional medical system is based on the placebo effect in one way or another.

If you’d like more information on the scientific evidence supporting the power of belief, I have a free report you may download from my website, at http://www.PowerKeysPub.com/WhyBeliefsMatter/.

Bringing It All Together
Okay, that’s enough of a review. Let’s bring it all together and see how this can make your mindpower work much more effective.

Since beliefs are the most telling factor regarding the results we’ll get with our mind-power work, and to believe something is to accept it as true, then it is imperative that we accept the outcome of our work as a reality before we finish whatever mind-power process we use. I’m sure you already know this and are doing it, at least to some degree.

Let’s not pass this off as obvious, and take a closer look, because there’s something hidden in the midst of all this that most people miss completely.

First of all, let’s consider WHY beliefs have such a great impact on our mind-power work. What happens when you are unsure of something, like stepping onto a rock? You tend to do it cautiously. Slowly, and ready to move a different way at a moment’s notice. Right? In effect, you are spreading your efforts (your physical force) across a larger area to minimize the impact of a mistake, or loose footing.

Now consider how you step forward when you KNOW the ground will be solid under your feet. You have a firm belief, a conviction, that your efforts will be productive and produce the result you seek – moving forward. Your physical force of movement is more tightly focused, and produces a greater intensity towards accomplishing the intended goal.

Okay, now consider how this may be applied to mind-power work.

If you are unsure of what you are doing, your mind will waver hither and yon, never really committing to a single direction. On the other hand, if you are absolutely sure of yourself, full of confidence about what you are doing, your mental force will be more focused and therefore produce a better result, no?

So it follows that in order to maximize the effectiveness of your mind-power work, you should start out by eliciting within yourself a strong feeling of confidence about what you are about to do.

Take a moment now, and just sit back and consider the impact of this realization and let it sink down into your inner consciousness. Let your mind find new connections between this new insight and everything you currently know.

Putting This Into Practice
It wouldn’t serve much purpose to know WHAT to do without also knowing HOW to do it. Here are a few tips I’ve learned that make it super easy to be more confident within mere moments.

Most of the common suggestions are okay. Practice until you are comfortable using whatever mindpower process you’ve selected. Visualize yourself as being successful in this venture – getting the results you want. Dress up in good quality clothing. Take care of your physical body – get enough sleep, exercise, and good food. You know, that sort of thing.

However, if you really want to maximize your results, you’ll want to bring out the power-tools.

If I were like most online marketers, this is where I’d direct you to purchase my Keys To Power Mastery System, or even my book, Choose To Believe. However, I’m not like that, and I’ll give you some solid information.

One of the easiest and quickest ways to elicit within yourself a strong feeling of confidence is to focus your mind on something for which you already have abundant confidence. For example, if you are absolutely positive that 2+2=4, you could use that as a trigger to bring up a feeling of confidence. Yes, I know it sounds ridiculous, but hey, it works.

In fact, if you use a series of affirmative statements about things you already believe are true, this activates a principle NLP enthusiasts call “pacing and leading”. By ‘pacing’ your current beliefs, you elicit within yourself a strong feeling of trust (confidence / belief) that may be used to ‘lead’ your mind to accept other (new) statements as facts. In other words, your belief in one set of statements is transferred to a new statement, and your mind automatically begins to believe it more!

Here’s an example of how this is used:
1. I know that 2+2=4.
2. I know that I am living on planet Earth.
3. I know that there is an unseen Power that can do miraculous things.
4. I know that I am tapping into that Power now.
5. I know that this Power is building up within me.
6. I know that I am directing this Power to create the change I desire to see.
7. I know that this Power goes out and fulfills my wishes in a perfect way.
8. I know that I will soon see the changes I have chosen to effect.

By using the words, “I know that ……” we are focusing our attention on the strongest degree of belief that can possibly exist. If we were to say, “I believe that …..” the effect would not be as strong.

You are welcome to use any pacing statements you want in this format to elicit a strong feeling of confidence. It really doesn’t matter if your pacing statements relate to the end goal or not, however, I
tend to believe the end result will be better if they do tie in with your desired results.

In actual practice, you will usually repeat a series of pacing and leading statements a number of times rather than just once. There’s no hard and fast rule, but the guiding principle is that you continue until you feel absolutely confident in the final statement, which is the thing you want to have happen.

When this final statement feels just as true as the others, your work is done. In fact, this process may constitute the entirety of your mind-power routine. Of course, if you enjoy the other processes you work with, there’s no reason for you not to do them, so go ahead and enjoy yourself.

——————————————————————————————————

Have you noticed that the more you try to begin that exercise program the more you end up putting it off until tomorrow?

Or that the more your daughter insists she is trying to get her homework done the more she falls behind?

That is because inherent in the word “try” is an expectation of failure.

This video gives you access to five minutes of one of Jeff Gignac’s trainings from the third Month of the Super Mind Academy. (Where you can join for just $4.95!)

In just these few minutes you will learn how to use the word try in a way that will benefit you and those you are working with.

You will learn how to use a specific language pattern, “The More the More”, to greatly increase the effective of your communications.

And you will learn how the tonality of your voice affects the message that you deliver.

I strongly suggest that you watch this video at least three times. Pay attention to not only what Jeff is saying, but how he is saying it.

And then just try and find the weakness in what Jeff is describing.

I expect that the more you try and discover why this won’t work for you, the more you will realize that this simple communication technique makes all the difference.

We all feel frozen, unsure of our abilities, scared of the unknown at some point, but if you really want success you WILL need to step out of your comfort zone.

The first step is the hardest… but it gets easier once you get going.

… but you HAVE to be brave. Remember WHY you want to achieve your goals. Use visualization and affirmation techniques to keep you focused on the outcome.

Once you get going you’ll gain momentum. You’ll grow in strength and confidence. Be brave, it’s worth it…

… and it’s ok NOT to think positive thoughts all the time. It’s natural. We all have biorhythms, and that means our moods swing up and down each month. Naturally.

Trying to think positive thoughts all day when you’re feeling down will drive you insane!

Make the most of your positive days and work hard towards your goals.

If you’re feeling down and start to feel stressed, take a step away from your goals and just relax. Stop worrying. You’ll only attract the things you’re worrying about.

Take a walk. Take a vacation. Have some fun.

It’s all about balance and working with the flow… instead of fighting with yourself.

Or feeling guilty because you’re not fighting at all…

If fears and doubts are holding you back from making progress on your goals this motivation exercise may help get you started -

NLP Mind Power Technique For Motivation

Think about the most important BIG goal you’ve set yourself. Think about how you’d like to be really motivated to reach it, and to be really motivated to take action on those smaller goals that will lead you there.

Now, think back to a time in the past when you were really motivated. Think about how you took action on that motivation and did whatever it was you set out to do.

Run through that event and make the pictures bigger, brighter and more colourful. Feel what you felt and suck that motivation into your body as if you were there now, doing it again for the first time.

Make the emotions stronger and stronger, and keep building up the feeling of taking action and successfully doing what you set out to do. Run the story through your mind several times, each time building the momentum.

Now, as your motivation builds up, rub the palm of your dominant hand on your thigh. As you do so, think about even more occasions when you were highly motivated and increase those sensations even further.

Keep rubbing your thigh, and know that whenever you want to call upon that highly motivated feeling, all you have to do is rub your thigh.

Finally, while still rubbing your thigh, think about your most important BIG goal and all of the smaller goals you must complete to make it. Imagine reaching them with everything going well, reaching that big goal right on your deadline.

Can you see what we’re doing here? We are taking your motivation which you clearly have and adding it first to the motion of rubbing your palm on your thigh, and secondly adding that motivation to the thought processes of reaching your most important goal.

Now the great thing is that you can do that exercise for every goal you set yourself. By imagining it all going perfectly well and reaching every goal on time, you’re increasing your self-belief and getting your motivation flowing around your body.

And when you’re highly motivated and you take action on that motivation then you’re much more likely to reach your smaller goals which, in turn, breeds even more motivation.

If it helps, do that exercise a few times. You’ll soon feel incredibly motivated and, when your motivation starts to subside, rub your palm on your thigh to start bringing back all of those amazing motivational feelings!

And if at any point in the future you find your rub-your-thigh motivational trigger subsiding, simply do the entire exercise again.
