.

Nancy Solman – Biography

.
Nancy has been painting for most of her life, but only recently has she placed her work in front of the public eye. She lives in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

“I have drawn and painted all my life, it seems, and I don’t see any likelihood of stopping. I have not, to date, made any serious effort to display or sell my creations, but hope to change that.”

In addition to painting in acrylics, Nancy also works with watercolour, pencil, pen and collage. Her professional training is in fact Interior design, but over the past 25 years much of Nancy’s creative resources have gone into set design and scenic art.

“The Urban Fairy paintings are a sampling of my acrylic paintings. Most of the pieces are fairly small 10″ x 12″ up to a max of 40″ x 30″. The Faerie series is based on a request from my son-in-law to paint an Urban fairy painting and it simply snowballed from there.”

“I went on to paint more and more and found myself looking at and taking pictures of anything that would lend itself to having a fairie settled in on it. I have many more ideas for the series, but at the moment I am side tracking into a more metaphysical series and I am working on a personal challenge of not using any black or white pigments while painting (for the next 45 days) as well as working with only one brush size per painting. I want to work on loosening up from the insane details that the fairie paintings required of me. I will need to return to much of that level of detail when painting the fairies because of the nature of the wee creatures.”

For many years I worked in mixed media, creating abstract art on large canvases, often using my photographs within the art work. But over the last ten years my focus has been mostly on the photography. I still do more abstract work than realistic, but will work with whatever style gets my thoughts across.

Recently, I illustrated Rob Bryanton’s latest book “O is for Omniverse”, and used a combination of drawing, painting, photography and digital manipulation to portray the ideas that he has put forth.

To me, nature is awe inspiring and I attempt to show the beauty I see, in my photographs.

Mother Nature is constantly creating works of art. When the fog rolls in, everything becomes very mystical and mysterious; when the sun peeks through the parted clouds it accents and emphasizes; when flakes of snow are sprinkled across the angles of boulders, cubist abstracts are created.

And liquid water is the most wonderful of all. Constantly changing shapes and colours, reflecting back the surrounding colours or the colour of the sky above, it laps or burbles or crashes against the shore. Rocks too, intrigue me. The earth takes all manner of matter, and under pressure creates rock, then sets to work on crumbling it to dust once again. It’s part of nature’s recycling program.

Trees also get recycled. While growing they provide home and food to creatures big and small, and with assistance from millions other processes and critters, they rot away to replenish what they have drawn from the soil and air.

I find beauty in all aspects of nature big and small, because I find a beauty in the wisdom of the process itself. Nothing is wasted– everything is re-processed–no matter how long it takes. It is in nature that I feel at one with the universe and find a serenity that radiates into my soul. I hope that viewers of my photos will see that peace as well.

At only $6.99 plus shipping and handling these photos – framed or unframed – can be used as a touchstone to remind each of us to take a moment and connect to the calm within.

Belinda is a spiritual artist in the sense that she gains her inspiration and ideas from meditation and nature, instead of from the mind. “Ideas just flow to me when I am centred in nature, especially in the bush or the mountains” she says. “As I am working on a painting spirit is working with me on a different level channelling unique transformational energies into the artwork. And then when people view the artwork they can feel things working on an energetic level as well. People have had huge healings and heart opening experiences through the artwork and I am pleased that I can be a catalyst in this beautiful healing process for people.

I was born in Birmingham on 7th April 1949 and after I left school I worked in a commercial art studio until the age of 18. This was followed by three years with an exhibition and display company before I ended up as a full-time professional freelance artist.

One day by chance I was introduced to Bill Ward, the drummer of a local Birmingham band Black Sabbath and we soon became good friends. Eventually along with Bills girlfriend and a couple of roadies for the band we moved from the city into a farm house in the country.

Over the next four years life became pretty crazy and I started to spend more and more time with the band, touring, at the recording studios and of course the mad parties.

Although at that time life was mainly centred around the band I still continued painting. I received a number of commissions from stars including a mural in the house of John Bonham (Led Zeppelin) and paintings for Alvin Lee (Ten Years After) , Ian Paice (Deep Purple and later Whitesnake), Ozzy Ozbourne (Black Sabbath) and George Harrison (The Beatles).

In the late seventies I moved to Devon and my love of the ocean grew as I began painting seascapes to sell in local exhibitions. In the early eighties I painted a number of portraits including those of Bob Marley and John Lennon as I felt inspired by them and what they stood for. In these years I was becoming more aware of environmental issues and became a member of Greenpeace for whom I went on to paint The Rainbow and The Rubicon.

Nature and the environment and especially dolphins and whales began to feature heavily in my work. I became interested in whales because they are the largest creatures upon this planet and yet a perfect example of grace and harmony in their environment and dolphins for their wonderful playful spirit.

In 1990 I joined an agency and for the next eight years my work was sold internationally as posters, prints, cards, jigsaws, plates and many other formats. Relations with the agency eventually broke down and I decided to leave and go solo again.

My work since the agency once again took a more fantasy type direction and I worked on number of themes from hobbity type dwarf characters to visions of imaginary magical lands and images inspired from dreams. I have also in my time been involved in many projects on a voluntary basis for local charities, schools and good causes. Ive created a number of large scale murals in local schools as well as in private houses.

In more recent years I discovered the wonders of digital art and have experimented with a mix of digital and traditional techniques to not only create my work but also distribute it.

The original idea of an Angel came from a photo I took of a little french girl I met in Goa India her name is ‘Norangel’ I was then inspired having been at a Healing Ceromony where I learnt more about 2012 and the ending of the Mayan calender being a time of transformation a new beginning of conscious expansion of great Love and Light coming into the world and into our Hearts.

A tribute to John Lennon revealing the essence of the man and his music.

In 1981 I was contacted by an old friend who was at that time the road manager with the band Whitesnake. The band were not happy with current ideas for an album cover that EMI studios were suggesting and so I was asked to come up with a few ideas of my own. The album in question was called Come And Get It and my design of a glass apple with a snake inside was accepted. The album become a best seller for Whitesnake.

At a meeting with Whitesnakes vocalist David Coverdale and the rest of the band to discuss ideas it became evident that the house where they were recording was the very same house that John Lennon & Yoko Ono had once lived and where they recorded the song and video of Imagine. The house was Tittennhurst Park and was at that time owned by fellow Beatle Ringo Starr.

Later that night I took a look around the house and eventually wandered into that famous white room and sat in the spot where the legendary white grand piano would have been. A shiver ran down my back and at that point a I imagined the image as you see it now. It was only a few weeks after John had been shot in December of 1981 and a very moving experience.

In 1988 I received a newsletter from Greenpeace in which there was a photograph of a boat which was to sail around the UK to research causes for pollution and the decline in sea life. The sailing boat was called The Rubicon.

History tells us that Julius Caesar and his army made a decision to flout an ancient Roman law and cross the Rubicon river in Italy and commit himself to action. I have always tried to do what I can and where possible use my talent to help the planet and good causes. As a keen supporter of environmental causes I committed myself to action and painted this picture with the intention of helping to raise funds for Greenpeace. It was made into posters and over a 2-3 year period raised over £20,000. I am duly proud of this image and the good it has done.

Reflection in the eye of an elephant. This painting came together through a meeting with a guy who told me of this dream that he had often had. He explained it as being a close up of an elephants eye with three elephants at a watering hole at sunset reflected in the eye and asked me if I could paint it.

It is said that when you put down a recurring dream on to paper that the dream stops but I never found out if it did.

This painting represents the fact that we, the human race, hold the future of the Earth in our hands and that if we don’t get things together we may drown in our own tears. The dolphins represent the spiritual side of our nature.

I donated the original of this painting to help raise funds for the Tsunami Disaster that shook us all that Christmas morning in 2004

I grew up among the lakes and woods of Michigan. I have been painting and drawing my spiritual experiences and insights most of my life, as a kind of journal to my development. I have experienced vivid dreams most of my life and have had moments when I see auras, energies and spirit beings. In my 20s I learned shamanic journeying, crystal and stone work and rune lore. I also learned the practice of Reiki and BodyTalk. All of these have helped me understand my relationship to the world more and our energy body more and because of these shifts in awareness they have also influenced my artwork.

Kentucky is a new home for myself and Wildman Studio, my art and graphic design studio. I have been selling my work over the years through different venues, but my website and blog have now become the center point in sharing not only my artwork but also my spiritual experiences with collectors.

The process of creating my artwork is individual to what I seek to create. But the overall reason I create art is that it helps me understand my spiritual experiences more. Sometimes in the creation process I reveal something new that gives me more insight to the experience. My hope in sharing my art is that the viewers are able to connect with the imagery and maybe awaken and stir their own inner vision of this reality.

I have couple of recurring images in my work concentric circles and the monoliths. The concentric circles in my work represent spirit. I had a dream long ago where I remember walking back to my car in the dark and I could feel light behind me and see it in the corner of my eye. I remember saying show your self to me and I willed myself to turn and I saw a group of these spheres zip off into the woods. The monoliths, stone steel forms with their markings are the manifestation of Will with each holding it’s own story.

You can view more of my work by visiting Wildman Studios

Abstract 123009
Watercolor and gouache, 6” x 9”

My abstract works are a process of discovery. I start with wet in wet and let the process unfold. I have no preconceived ideas about what will evolve on the page. Instead as I work and start to see things I bring those parts out a little bit at a time with each new layer.

In abandoning myself to the process, I find it evolves on it’s own. Sometimes these images have recognizable elements in them animals, spirits, or landscapes.

In this abstract I feel like I’m looking up into the upper world and seeing the swiftly moving energy there. Deep inside the central mass of energy of the painting there is a being waiting to be revealed. It could be an angel or ancestor floating above us, watching and guiding.

.

Utterance
18″ x 24″ oil painting on canvas

This painting tells the story of how I experience Magic. How our words and thoughts are sent out into the world and create. Many cultures have in their creation mythos a great sound that occurred before the world was created. John 1:1 “In the beginning there was the word, the word was with God, and the word was God.” In Norse myths the first being to emerge was called Ymir, which is translated as primal scream or yell. These are just a couple of examples. We need to take care in the words we chose and thoughts we send out into the world. Spirit is more than willing to help up with your call.

.

Abstract 122709
Watercolor and Gouache, 3.5” x 5.25”

In Abstract 122709 I have connected with the underworld energy. This painting is earthy and yet shows signs of light peaking through. Which shows us that even in the densest matter, light resides.

.

Tranceman
18″ x 24″ oil painting on canvas

Meditation and trance are 2 ways that we can reach out beyond our world and touch the multiple dimensions beyond our 3rd dimensions self. Trance Man is the first in a series of layered reality paintings I did in oil.

.

Dagvidhr
6″ x 9″ watercolor on paper

In most magical traditions a student is given or takes a name that represents themselves. Dagvidhr is a name I had taken to show the new growth and light I was drawing into my life. I was searching for a name in a shamanic journey when this led me to experiencing myself as a tree filled with light. Dagvidhr, in Old Norse can be translated as Day Tree. This painting is of the experience I had during this journey.

Both Owl and Otter are made on Artist Trading Cards also called ACEO, Artist Card Edition or Original. It allows me to create original art that can fit anyone budget. I love working in these small sizes and I love the portability of these images.

Owl is sitting quietly beneath the moon listening and watching. What do you need to change in your life? What do you want to let go of? What do you need to see that lies in the dark/hidden places of your life?

.

The Energy Body
Graphite on Paper 8″ x 10″

When I started this drawing, I was dealing with a lot of frustration about what my art is about. The first thing to appear was an eye and then some energy and more of the face and so on. I was being showed through this drawing what my energy body looked like during an intense moment of ecstasy where my heart chakra surged. This drawing is an example of not having any intent in its beginning and then revealing an important moment that helped me reconnect to the experience.

.

Otter
Mixed media on ACEO watercolor card. 3.5″ x 2.5.”

Otter is swimming deep in the sea. Invite Otter to come and play with you. He can teach you how to roll and play on the crashing waves of life and then dive deep into the darkness and find the treasure you need to bring back to the surface. Otter has been a life long companion for me in my shamanic journeys and dreams.

————————————————————-

I would like to tell you a bit about me. I live in Busselton, a beautiful seaside resort in Western Australia, 2.5 hrs south of Perth.

I have a disability….why do I add this…because it is part of who I am & why I do what I do.

I was told in 1991 that I would never work again, I was put in a very restricting back brace and told to be happy I was alive & not in a wheelchair.

Needless to say I was far from happy….. I was depressed and disillusioned. I needed something to occupy me & lift me out of this negative mind set.
I have a strong belief in God, he is my best friend, so I prayed that God would help me.

I thought, “What can I do?” I struggled with this for some time & then one day standing on the side of the road looking out across a field I thought, “Photography” I had no experience in this, so enrolled in a short course at TAFE to learn more. I found I couldn’t sit for long, but managed to get through
the course & then began shooting in earnest.

This was back in the days of film. As I became more involved in my photography I took another course that focused more on the creative side of photography & found it very inspiring. I had always been good with computers, so I started up my own small business, “Jules Photography & Printing” A lot of my work involved making business cards and flyers but I also did events and eventually weddings. During this time my back was getting stronger and with the help of some natural therapies I was able to take the brace off. I ran the business for 2 yrs.

But life wasn’t meant to be easy and I was then diagnosed with another Bipolar disorder. As I was struggling to come to terms with this I gave up my photography and immersed myself in self help groups and volunteered to help others and I studied Reiki and became a Reiki Master. These endeavors took up all my time and energy.

Once again through the help of alternative therapies I was able toovercome this condition & had started back working in my vocational field of Personal Assistant & Bookkeeping. My son was studying Accountancy, so I suggested we go into business together. We started “BB Balancing Your Books”. Well within 12 months my back pain had returned with a vengeance & I knew I couldn’t continue in this work so I handed the business over to my son and my Hubby and I decided on a sea change.

It was the best thing we could have done. I love being near the beach and as I immersed myself in nature I once again began to experience its healing properties. But once again life threw me a curve ball.

I was in constant pain so asked the Dr to do some more tests to see if we could isolate the problem. The tests came back & my Dr explained that I had severe osteoarthritis in my spine & there was nothing they could do for it. After I got over the initial shock I went to see a specialist who promptly informed me that I could not lift anything, could not walk more than 50m, could not swim or do anything else. I cried all the way home!!!

Then I thought, “NO! I may as well do what I can & if I end up in a wheelchair so be it”

I then went for a walk down the beach and as I stood looking out over the vast expanse of ocean I prayed, “Lord, please help me” and straight away the thought popped into my head, “photography helped me last time, maybe it can help me again.”

So I went home & told hubby I was buying a digital camera. Well the rest is history, I still have severe osteoarthritis but with the help of my Dr, a new specialist and natural therapies I am able to have some quality of life. I cannot work a regular job as I have good days & bad. They discovered I also have Fibromyalgia, so I have periods where the pain flares & I just have to have lots of down time. But doing my photography I am able to pace myself according to my body, I don’t do weddings or events as I cannot guarantee having a good day, but I can take images of nature.

At first, like most of us, I was unsure of my ability, but as I started entering competitions and winning them my confidence grew & I realized that I had something I could share with others. I began getting feedback from others…..

“Magnificent iconic capture! Well done!“, Jennifer Saville

“Lovely capture Julia, the colors are gorgeous!“, Kylie Sheahen

“Beautiful, poignant message in this amazing image“, Wendy Slee

“Hi Julia…I just read about this in the journal of the new MOS group, so thought I’d come and have a look!! Awesome image and brilliant message…so important. Am going to send this to a passionate environmentalist friend. I’m sure she’ll love it!!“, Jan Stead.

My goal then came to be that I wanted to share the healing properties of nature with everyone, but I realized so many people don’t have the time,
the ability or the opportunity to get out in nature as I do, so I began to try to bring nature to them, through my photography.

Ansell Adams, a great photographer, once said, “Solitude which is so vital to individual man is almost nowhere”. This is so true, that I wanted to encourage others to build a healing space even in the office, where they can be transported by an image to somewhere in nature so that their souls as well as their bodies may be revitalized.

I have donated some of my work to hospitals around the world & I give my family & friends gifts of my photography, but I wanted to reach others,
so I started my own website, a blog called “Healing Art” which gives has articles on health and photography tips as well. I also joined Red Bubble and an online art gallery in Margaret River to help get my work out there. So if you feel that you too would benefit from the healing nature brings, then have a look at my images and purchase some for yourself or your friends.

I try to keep my prices as reasonable as possible while at the same time covering the cost of my equipment. I value myself & what I do and hope you will value it as well. I pray that you will receive healing and peace from my images.

If you want to contact me, my email is jules@juliaharwood.com ; my website is http://www.juliaharwood.comor if you can’t access “flash” media sites use my blog at http://juliaharwood.blogspot.com to access my other sites.
Confidence ad Vitality

This is an image taken in the center of Australia of one of our great icons, Uluru. This is a sacred site for the aboriginal people and has an awesome ‘presence’ about it. This is the rock at sunset when the sun has turned it to red, which symbolizes confidence, vitality and courage. As you look at this image and lose yourself in it you will find you vitality and confidence increased.

*

Endurance

This is a sunrise over the Flinders Ranges in South Australia. The oranges and yellows speak to us of endurance and stimulated the nervous system. The sunrise symbolizes the promise of the day. So as you immerse yourself in this, feel the strength of endurance and optimism and you will find yourself able to complete those previously daunting tasks.

*

Fertility and Life

These are two kingfishers or kookaburras as we call them in Australia. They are set against a green background which speaks of life, fertility and well-being. As you gaze at this image allow life’s energy to flow through you and accept wellness into your life.

*

Purity

This one is of the Stairway to the Moon, a phenomenon which occurs when the full moon rises over the mud flats left at low tide. The white of the moon speaks of purity and the stairway that access is available to heaven. It has also been said that looking at the moon for 5minutes per day helps improve eye site and reduces ‘floaters’ in the eyes.

*

Purity of Heart, calming mind and nerves

This one is like taking a tonic. The water lily has long been used to aid meditation and purple speaks of meditation, intuition, calming nerves and mind. Spend time meditating on this image and receive the healing it brings.

*

Receive vitality and warmth from the suns rays

This is an image of the rays of sunlight streaming down through the clouds to bring you warmth and vitality. The words say, “Let the sun’s rays warm you and bring you comfort, allow the lights healing energy to touch your soul.

*

Truth and spirituality

This is an image taken on the cliffs above the Great Australian Bight. It is a windswept harsh area where only the strong survive. The image of the cliffs combined with the blue of the sea and the sky speak of truth, strength and spirituality. So often people think of spirituality as a crutch, but this shows the true nature of spirituality, that it is strong, steady, standing the test of time and the winds of change. As you spend time meditating on this image feel the strength permeate you, accept the truth and receive the peace of the blue sea and sky.

*

Wisdom, Joy and Happiness

This is a tropical sunset in Darwin NT,Australia. The oranges and yellows speak to us of wisdom, joy and happiness. As you look into this image allow happiness and joy to wash over you and let wisdom find a resting place in your heart.

I first began to paint at age 22, having had no art tuition at school. I painted some oils and water colours on and off until I was 24, but was critical of my efforts and discarded most of them as I felt they did not look ‘realistic’ enough. Career, lack of space and the belief that I was ’no good at art’ led me to put my paints aside. Then in October 2006 I had a spiritual experience which motivated me to paint again.

Where to start was a challenge. I thought I had forgotten how to apply paint. In early 2007 I went to a few classes with a local landscape artist which got me started with acrylics, but quickly realised that his style did not convey the feelings and images I wanted to express. Then I started painting intuitively, not knowing how the picture was going to emerge. The results were exciting and spurred me on.

Even now I feel that these works are my most inspired. I had no knowledge of methods, techniques or style to order the free expression of the creative flow. I therefore had to rely heavily on inspiration and allow the creative impulse to flow through me until the works were complete.

You can see many of my original paintings at www.goldenhillart.co.uk

Limited Edition Giclee prints are also available of all my work.

I have worked as a hypnotherapist, healer and workshop leader for the past 11 years. My close rapport with my unconscious mind and Creative Source is also reflected in my art work. You can find out more about this aspect of my life on my website: www.lifechangetherapy.co.uk.

I am also a harpist, songwriter and poet. I live on a farm in West Wales. We have won EU funding to convert the outbuildings at the farm into an art gallery and studio, and therapy and training rooms. The building work is currently ongoing and due to be finished by April 2011. I hope that I will then be more able to integrate my interests. The therapeutic work enables the release of blocks to creativity and empowers us to lead a wonderful life. I am developing new courses to facilitate such work, which will hopefully commence in the summer of 2011.

The Paintings

1 Awakening – On canvas 20×20”

This painting represents for me an image of my own personal awakening, as well as the awakening of the universe. The poem below also expresses something of this concept. It is the first of my Dragon poems.

Dragon singing with the stars

Dragon
singing with the stars in the all-expanse,
until sky is sung into being,
with galaxies and morning star.

Sing your song, in this eternal moment
when the earth is born.

Flame of beauty, clothing a universe,
forming a flower,
colouring all, riotously,
and scenting summer gardens.

Let your song return to earth.
I am one who will sing with you.

X

2. The Cliffs of Ellenore – On canvas 20×16”

The Ellenore paintings began to take form in 2007, and from 2007-8 many of my paintings expressed the magic of Ellenore. A series of poems and a novel, which I am still in the process of writing, further developed the theme. The poem below relates to this picture.

The Cliffs of Ellenore

Let us fly again once more
to the cliffs of Ellenore,
where the mountains touch the sky
and the cliffs rise sheer and high.

Let us gather where the sea
moves in red and gold so free,
by the foam tossed southern shore
of the cliffs of Ellenore.

There the surf surges and sighs,
and the seagull’s screeching cries,
join our own eternal song,
to love’s chorus, ever strong.

At the birth of time we sing
to the soft beat of her wing,
at the shaping of the earth,
we sing the world to birth.

Our song is fierce with joy,
words creating to destroy
all barren hearts, to break
all bonds, that earth may wake.

Let us fly again once more
to the cliffs of Ellenore,
where the mountains touch the sky
let our song rise, soaring high.

May 2008

v

3. Fire Dragon- Dragon of the Heart’s Eternal Flame – On canvas 20×16”

This was one of the first images that emerged in the Ellenore/Dragon theme.

Dragon of My Heart’s Eternal Flame 1

Beat your wings of change Sushay,
to fan my heart’s eternal flame.
So long my heart was in form’s sway
yet now I’d break those bonds away..

My ears were deaf to passion’s tone,
yet from within I hear your truth.
Now in transcendent movement flown,
where bliss beyond belief is known.

My heart unfolds with your delight.
as I touch fire in my soul.
Let your flame shine throughout my night
to draw me to the dance of Light.

z

4 Rebirth – On canvas 20×16”

This painting conveys to me an image of the soul moving towards the light. It also carries the theme of rebirth through the material to the spiritual, of the body awakening to its birthright, of the Phoenix being reborn from the ashes of the old.

x

5 . Sun Sword – On canvas 20×16”

This painting suggests the image of light penetrating matter, of the wisdom of spirit informing the Earth, and of the Earth receiving the light of spirit.

x

6. Merimer – On canvas 20×16”

This painting developed in line with the poem below.

Merimer

Merimer, uncurl from your cave of indigo.

Unfold your wings, diaphanous with moon light.

Clear the old and shake out shining night,
soar with the One, star bright.

Your being fills the void with joy,
pure presence come from All That Is.
Let me dive into the heart of this,
beyond illusion’s emptiness.

Now I will look at all I fear.
No seer of shadows will I be.
Let light transform all that is me,
Let love refine all that I see.

X

7. Spring – On canvas 20×16”

My feeling while painting this picture was of the renewal and the rebirth of life after winter. For me, it also suggests the transformation that comes as we open ourselves to the creative flow and allow our lives to be charged with the energy of the Divine.

X

8. Earth Creatures – On Canvas 39″X30″

I painted this outside over the summer and finished it in early October 2010, and it is the biggest painting I have done so far to date. I have enjoyed listening to the different interpretations of the creatures depicted in this painting. Viewers have constructed many images existing here which I had no conscious awareness of.

I’m a soon-to-be 52 year old digital artist living in Virginia, USA. I began taking photographs in 2002, during a solo trip to Italy. I wanted to bring back memories for myself, and for my friends and family who couldn’t see what I was seeing. My husband bought me a printer so I could print out some of the pictures, and the printer came with photo editing software. My son showed me a few tricks, like inverting colors… and I was hooked!

I like taking what “is” and turning it into what it “could be”. The actual taking of the image is only the first step on the journey for me. I really enjoy playing with my images using Photoshop Elements to add new emphasis, or remove distractions, or change the image completely.
*
*
.

This image was originally a lovely pink hydrangea. I played with the hues and came up with something different… but still recognizable. I like moving the editing program’s slider bars until my stomach tightens a bit, and I’ll utter an “ooh!” – then I know I’ve hit something exciting.

I like to challenge myself to continue moving forward on my artistic studies – to try new things, and learn new techniques. Along the way, I fell in love with fractal art, and began experimenting – ultimately taking a class using a free fractal program, Apophysis (which can be found and downloaded by doing a search for “Apophysis” at http://www.sourceforge.net).

.

This image is a fractal, which is based upon repeating patterns – often found in nature. Some of my favorite fractals are ones that are reminiscent of something in ‘real life’ – like this icy, windswept-looking tree.

One of the other interesting things I’d experimented with was using a flat-bed scanner to take photos. Do you have a scanner? Then you have another camera – one that’s amazingly capable of capturing extremely small detail at high resolution.

.

This image is a rose laid upon the scanner with crumpled white tissue paper behind it. I liked how the paper ended up looking a lot like a granite cave wall… and I liked how it looked hard and sharp, in comparison to the softly graceful lines of the rose.

My favorite subjects tend to be flowers – I love using the macro setting on my camera to capture a super closeup of something people see every day, but tend to overlook. You know how a band will do their version of someone else’s well-known song, and it’s called a ‘cover’? Well, the way I look at it, I do covers of some of Nature’s greatest hits.

.

This is an iris – up close and very personal.

.

This image of a tulip is alllllmost abstract, to me. It’s readily identifiable as organic… you KNOW you’ve seen it before… but where?

.

Here’s a beautiful, all-white peony bloom with the colors more saturated. Aren’t those petals’ curves and ruffles gorgeous? Like a dance, in flower form.

.

This was a beautiful confluence of lines and colors in a small garden center on a gray and blustery November day. I loved how the fronds seemed enmeshed in each other.

.

This was a puddle in my driveway… it was right after a rainstorm, and the sky still had clouds scudding along, looking threatening. I took the shot, and then came in and played with the colors… and suddenly, it looked like a night sky to me. But if you look closely, you can still see the asphalt in the upper and lower corners – and a stick that breaks the water line. And those things that look like stars in the night sky? They’re really just rocks in my driveway.
.

Here’s one of my beloved kitties, Caramel. She’s no longer with us – we lost her 2 years ago – but I still smile when I see this shot of her. She was a lovely light in my life.

I get my inspiration from seeing sunlight streaming through the leaf of a plant…
or the lines of a building, or the swirl of ice etched on the windshield of my car.

I keep my camera in my purse at all times, just so I don’t have to kick myself for missing a shot. I’m constantly reminded that photography is a metaphor for life – the best, most dramatic shots are those that show a ‘battle’ between dark and light. It’s the contrasts that make it interesting.

I offer classes in digital editing (one on one at my home, or online), and in creative sight (how to help yourself “see” more wonderful opportunities for creativity, no matter what your chosen creative outlet is – photography, stained glass, quilting, cooking… everyone gets stuck sometimes. I have a few ways to help folks get UNSTUCK).

One of my newest favorite activities is creating slideshows using my images set to beautiful music… picking the perfect image for the crescendo in the music, and allowing it to change color, or mutate into another shot seamlessly, flowing gently one into another. I began my first slideshow as a project for my mom, who is in end-stage renal failure. She spends hours in dialysis each week, and I wanted to be able to give her a way to be somewhere else, mentally, while her body was a hostage of the tubes and machines that keep her alive. I call them relaxation videos – or visual meditations. The plan is to donate them to hospitals, hospice centers, patients and caregivers – and to sell them to the general public to finance those donations.

Artist’s Bio:
Lahn received the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Otis College of Art and Design in California. While in school, she was the first recipient of the Fredrick Monhoff Design Award and a member of an elite design group, Brooklyn Seven. Upon graduation, she worked as a graphic designer until a life-changing experience led her to graduate studies in theology and philosophy of religion. Subsequently, Lahn worked as a bilingual minister, teacher, translator, and editor while engaging in graphic art as a freelancer.

Continuing on the quest for new learning, Lahn began to explore the mind-body healing, which led to the study of fascinating, powerful human mind. She eventually became a certified clinical hypnotherapist. The unanticipated benefit of exploring the subconscious mind has been an opening of renewed creativity for Lahn and the result is her deeply personal recent artwork. Lahn’s diverse cultural and professional background has informed and enriched her creative endeavors and affirms her belief in interconnection and interdependence of all things in life.

Artist’s Statement:
My art is inspired by what I see in the natural world with its expressive qualities and how it evokes varied emotional responses. I am also fascinated by an individual’s inner world: its complex thought processes as well as rich, dynamic layers of feelings, and how they are manifested outwardly.

Creative process is a form of meditation that allows me to approach each piece with intuition and discovery. My artwork evokes lyrical, contemplative, and at times intense feelings expressing externally what is experienced internally. By incorporating natural materials into my paintings, the pieces are very tactile resulting in compelling physical presence.

For me, visual art is one of the most powerful, efficacious means to experience, express, and ultimately embrace all of human experiences. And from that acceptance and openness, authentic connection and communication occur with people and the world around me. I view the creative work in the same way as myself… growing and evolving.
